Local production support for international companies filming in Manchester, from a fixer based in the city

Manchester is one of the UK’s leading production hubs, and for an overseas production it’s one of the easiest places in the country to shoot: a compact, film-friendly city with a deep crew base, major studios, a supportive film office, and an extraordinary range of locations packed into a small area. It’s also my home city. When a foreign production needs to film in Manchester, I run the entire local operation so your team can land and shoot.

I’m Tim Ellis, a fixer based in Manchester. I supply the local crew, kit, locations, permits, insurance and logistics, and I know the city well enough to tell you which street doubles for where before you’ve booked a flight.

Why productions shoot in Manchester

A city that shapeshifts. Manchester’s real trick is how many other places it can be. The Northern Quarter’s red-brick warehouses and side streets regularly stand in for New York and period London, and have appeared in everything from Captain America to It’s a Sin. The grand civic architecture, Manchester Town Hall, John Rylands Library, doubles convincingly for the Houses of Parliament and institutional London (Darkest Hour, The Crown, Peaky Blinders, Sherlock Holmes all shot here). You can shoot gritty urban, grand period and sleek contemporary within a few streets of each other.

Everything close together. Unlike London, Manchester is compact. Locations, crew, kit houses and unit bases are minutes apart, not an hour across a congested city. That’s less time lost in transit and more on screen, and it keeps budgets down.

Serious infrastructure. The city has major studio facilities including Space Studios, The Sharp Project and Dock10 at MediaCity, an experienced high-end TV and commercial crew base, and the full supporting chain from kit hire to post. Whatever your production needs, it’s here.

Landscape and coast on the doorstep. Manchester sits within easy reach of the Peak District (wild moorland and stately homes), the Lake District, and the Lancashire coast, so a city shoot can pick up dramatic exteriors without a major move. More on that on my [LINK: Northern UK page].

Filming in Manchester, the practical side

Manchester has a dedicated city film office, Screen Manchester (part of Manchester City Council), which handles filming permissions across the city, from location permits to road closures and traffic management. I work with their process regularly, which means permits, permissions and the paperwork around them get handled properly rather than becoming a scramble the week of the shoot. Knowing how the local system actually works, and who to talk to, is half the job.

One honest note worth having: Manchester Town Hall, one of the most-used doubles, has been closed for renovation, so if you had it in mind I’ll steer you to the alternatives that give the same look. That’s exactly the kind of thing a local fixer saves you from finding out too late.

What I handle

Local crew. Vetted, professional Manchester crew. Because an overseas company can’t easily book UK crew directly, I take on the booking and stand behind payment, which is why crew work with me and turn up.

Equipment. Camera, lighting and grip, sourced locally and ready when you land.

Locations and permits. Scouting and photographing options, securing locations, and sorting permits and permissions through Screen Manchester and private landowners.

UK insurance and risk assessments. Arranging local insurance and writing the risk assessment, which many foreign productions don’t produce themselves and which permits and most location hires require.

Catering, transport and logistics. Feeding the crew, local drivers who know the city, security where needed, and sorting where your team stays and eats off the clock.

Local and cultural knowledge. The part no search engine covers, from how things work on the ground to translating the accent for a visiting crew.

Recent work

I recently fixed a New Balance shoot in the North West with Everton’s Tyler Dibling, servicing a French production company and their New York partners, handling scouting, permits, insurance, crew, security and weather cover end to end.
